eVivaHuman-led oral defence for secondary schools

Worried AI did too much?
Ask them to explain it.

eViva helps secondary-school teachers add short, controlled oral defences to work they already assess, so students can explain the ideas and reasoning behind it.

No AI detection · No AI marking · Teacher judgement

Step 1: Set the questions

Set shared questions about the assignment, or ask individual students about their own work. Use fixed questions or draw at random from reusable sets.

Step 2: Students respond

Students record a short oral defence in class or at home. Integrity events are logged, and videos save directly to your organisation’s cloud storage.

Step 3: Review the evidence

Decide whether each oral defence provides strong, partial or limited evidence of understanding. Give feedback and stand behind the grade you award.

Feedback to Amelia

You went beyond the essay here! The point about federal relief reshaping expectations of government was your own, and you defended it with the 1935 figures. It was a joy to hear you explain that.

In the age of AI, authorship is increasingly difficult to verify. Understanding can still be evidenced.
Don't detect. Ask.

Understand The Process

Submitted work shows what a student produced, but not how they got there. eViva asks students to explain their choices, sources and reasoning, revealing the learning that took place along the way.

Verify Their Understanding.

AI opens new possibilities for teaching and assessment, but the essential question remains: what did the student understand? A short oral defence gives teachers direct evidence of what each student knows and can explain.

Strengthen Student Voice.

Regular oral reflection helps students articulate their thinking, recognise how they learned and develop a voice of their own. eViva makes this routine without adding another time-consuming written journal.

Evidence, not accusation

When authorship is uncertain,
the answer is not more AI.

AI detectors estimate authorship. eViva gives students a fair opportunity to explain their ideas, decisions and reasoning in their own words.

AI DETECTORS

Guess.

They return a probability score you cannot show a student or explain to a parent.

eViva

Gathers evidence.

A recording of the student explaining the work in their own words is something you can watch, share and stand behind.

Works with what you already assess

Keep the assignment. Add the evidence.

The student's original work stays where it already lives, in your LMS, Google or Microsoft tools, another tab, or on paper. eViva adds a short oral defence without importing the assignment or replacing your existing assessment workflow.

Built for the classroom

A viva for every student, without losing a lesson.

Students can record in parallel during class, giving you a controlled oral check without scheduling individual vivas. They can also complete eVivas remotely when additional evidence is appropriate. Either way, you collect a structured set of oral-defence recordings to review when it makes sense for you.

01

Set the questions

Create up to five shared or individual questions. Set the preparation and recording time for each, and add an image, screenshot or text reference when useful.

02

Share a unique link

Each student receives a unique link to their own eViva. There’s no account, password or software to install. Students check their camera and microphone, then record directly in the browser.

03

Controlled preparation and recording

You control the preparation and recording time. When preparation time ends, recording begins automatically and runs once, with no re-recording. Relevant session events are logged for review.

04

Recordings stay with your institution

Files save directly to Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive. eViva retains no copy, leaving your institution in control of access, retention and deletion.

Professional judgement

Do they know what they wrote?

Review the eViva alongside the student’s original work, whether it is open in another tab or sitting on your desk. Record whether the oral defence provides strong, partial or limited evidence of understanding. eViva never marks or scores the response. The professional judgement remains yours.

  • Private By DefaultYour judgement remains visible only to you until you choose to share it.
  • Ready for moderationWhen a decision needs a second look, the recording and your judgement can support moderation, departmental review or a conversation with a parent.
  • Ask a follow-upNeed more evidence, or want to explore an insightful response? Send a follow-up question anchored to the original answer. The student receives a new eViva to clarify or extend their thinking.

Connected cloud storage

Recordings stay in the ecosystem you already use.

Sign in with Google and recordings save directly to the connected Google Drive. Sign in with Microsoft and they save directly to the connected OneDrive. eViva keeps no separate copy, and the recordings remain in that account if you stop using the service.

When staff use institution-managed accounts, recordings remain within the school’s existing cloud environment and are governed by its access, retention and deletion policies.

Built for schools

Designed around how schools actually work.

01

Consistent conditions for every student.

Set common preparation and recording times for the class. Apply approved extra-time accommodations proportionally, with absent students completing later under the same conditions.

02

One link. No student account. Nothing to install.

Students join from a unique link in a supported browser. There’s no account, password or software to install. eViva works across Chromebooks, iPads, laptops, shared PCs and mobile devices with a camera and microphone.

03

Live session monitor.

See who is waiting, recording or submitted, and which sessions have generated integrity events, while the lesson is still running.

04

Add context to questions.

Attach a diagram, extract, image or screenshot to any question. Students see the reference when preparation begins and throughout their recording.

05

Logs that are ready to export.

Export a CSV showing who submitted, when they completed their eViva, which device they used and how long each response lasted.

06

Designed for your ecosystem.

Use Google or Microsoft sign-in, import Google Classroom rosters, and connect to your LMS or VLE through LTI 1.3. eViva was created by a practising educator and school technology leader who understands the realities of school systems.

Common questions

What eViva does, and does not do.

Does eViva detect whether work was written by AI?
No. AI detectors produce predictions about authorship. eViva gives students an opportunity to explain the ideas and reasoning behind their work in their own words.
Does eViva grade students?
No. The teacher decides whether the oral defence provides Strong, Partial or Limited evidence of understanding, or whether they cannot yet judge.
Does eViva prove that a student wrote the original work?
No. An eViva provides additional evidence of understanding. In-class completion can offer more controlled conditions, but the teacher remains responsible for interpreting the evidence.
Does the original student work need to be uploaded?
No. The work can remain in your LMS, another browser tab, a document, a coding environment or on paper.
Do students need an account?
No. Each student receives a unique link and records directly from a supported browser.
Where are recordings stored?
For Google sign-in users, recordings save to the connected Google Drive. For Microsoft sign-in users, they save to the connected OneDrive.
